Plaudit from Scott Speck

Joe Gifford is responsible for much of the way that I feel about conducting, about music, about movement, about life.  It's because of Joe that I constantly strive to achieve focus and balance on the podium, become an empty vessel, fill up with the spirit, abandon my preconceptions, and take the plunge into the unknown. It's largely because of Joe that conducting has become an endless, joyous adventure for me.  Joe, you're more than a teacher and a friend — you're a precious gift to the conducting world.

Jill Uchiyama's beautiful film The Legacy of Joseph Gifford is an indispensable testimonial to a great teacher of our century. Generations of artists, dancers, actors, singers, instrumentalists and conductors have had their lives changed profoundly through knowing Joe. I will always consider him a great mentor on my life's journey. How marvelous to have this living document of Joe's incomparable depth, compassion, humanity and good humor.
